#35 – Grizzly Man – Werner Herzog – 2005

The #35 film, Werner Herzog’s, “Grizzly Man” compiles footage collected by bear enthusiast, and pretty much fucking wack-job Timothy Treadwell, from his alaskan expeditions. Herzog splices the footage along with interviews with other naturalists, bear enthusiasts, friends, family members, and enemies of Treadwell. Treadwell set off to Alaska every year for a two month period to observe the animals in their own environment, but he crosses the line between man and beast along the way. Herzog is no stranger to documentary film-making and he always does it in an interesting way. He rarely remains objective about things. He does choose sides and gives his two cents especially in this film. He understands that Treadwell wasn’t always in the right for what he was doing, and probably harmed the creatures he loved more than he helped them, but he also sees a beauty in what Treadwell did, and he creates an entertaining and interesting story of a disturbed man.
