30 Minutes or Less – review

30 Minutes or Less

30 Minutes or Less stars Jesse Eisenberg (Nick) from The Social Network, as a slacker 20 something pizza delivery driver, and Parks and Rec’s Aziz Ansari (Chet) as his best friend.  Nick goes about his days with little on his mind except delivering pizzas and hiding his love for Chet’s sister.  Chet is pretty much a half a step above Nick in the slacker world.  He is a substitute teacher who is trying to get a full time gig, but it’s just not working out for him.Photobucket

Nick and Chet’s lives are about to drastically change as Dwayne (Danny McBride) and Travis (Nick Swarson) decide to kidnap Nick, after seeing a commercial for his pizza place on TV, strap a bomb to his chest, and force him to rob a bank and get them 100k dollars.  Dwayne wants the money in order to hire a hit man to kill his military father, who won the lottery about a decade or so back.  Dwayne and Travis are also the ultimate slackers having no jobs, and sitting around getting high and watching Friday the 13th films in 3D all day long.

Once Nick is kidnapped he is given the day to rob the bank or else the bomb strapped to his chest will be set off and he’ll be blown to pieces.  He immediately enlists Chet’s help to try and get the bomb off.  They have no luck and decide that robbing the bank is the only way to get the bomb removed.  Hijinks ensue as Nick and Chet successfully rob the bank and attempt to flee the police and get the money back to Dwayne and Travis before their ultimate destruction

Now I think Jesse Eisenberg is an extremely talented actor.  I loved him in Social Network andAdventureland, which both made my top 10 list in their respective years released.  I think Aziz Ansari is a comedic genius also, hilarious in Parks and Rec, but when you put the two of them together it spells a recipe for disaster.  They each try to one up the other throughout the course of the film which makes them annoying more than anything.  Danny McBride and Nick Swarson have the same chemistry going on as well which makes for a jumble of a film.

There are some funny scenes throughout the course of the film, and a little bit of action to boot, but in the end 30 Minutes or Less is one of those films with an extremely flimsy script that only got greenlit because of the actors attached to the project.  Unfortunately these very talented actors can’t pull it off in the end.
